Opinion

 By:  Ada Z.

During the past several years, during the Trump presidency and the COVID crisis, the social climate has changed dramatically.  Never in my lifetime have I seen the media so skewed in one direction to support a single party or political agenda.  Maybe I wasn't always paying attention fully but the division in America seemed very much enhanced by the media during these times.  Not only was there division but there was also censorship.  If a social media post didn't jive with the current narrative, the social media platform would deem it misinformation or even take the post down altogether.

The inspiration for our podcast came from these tumultuous years of censorship and division.  We found ourselves afraid to say what we really thought and scared that if we put it out into the world (although we are small fish in a very big sea) cancel culture would come after us as well.

After talking extensively about every subject that has plagued us over the past few years, we decided that we did have a lot to say and we wanted to speak our minds even if no one listened.  We set out on a mission to not only talk about controversial topics but also wanted to speak our minds about anything and everything and forming our own opinions about those subjects.

That is when we came up with the title of our podcast, Opinion Piece.  People do not have to agree with everything we say but we find that it is very important to listen to other people's opinions.  I think it's odd that people get angry when listening to someone's opinion about something.  Instead of getting angry because it doesn't align with your beliefs; listen and learn.  You may not agree but you may get an idea of where people are coming from.

This world and our political world would be in much better shape if we could listen to everyone's opinion and come to a middle ground.  Not everything has to be so black or white.  Gray has always been one of my favorite colors.

  1. I couldn't agree more. This world (India included) has become horribly polarised from not listening or talking to people who have a different opinion. We exist happily in our own echo chambers and when we do listen, it's with scant respect and with the impulse to jump in and refute their arguments as soon as possible.
